CanoScan freezes XP

snap8695 - windows xp boot screen

The picture above is a Windows XP freeze on boot. This is occuring when a borrowed CanoScan FS2710 slide scanner is powered on. When the scanner is off, no freeze occurs.

The CanoScan is the only SCSI device attached. The SCSI ID dial on the back of the CanoScan is set to 6. The controller used is a PCI Adaptec AHA-2920C .

The scanner is attached to the card with a 50-pin cable. Windows XP recognizes the card as an AIC-7850 PCI SCSI controller. The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-deluxe. The CanoScan shows up on Adaptec's bios boot up list.

When booting in safe mode, the system freezes when it reaches \WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys:

When the same scanner is attached to a 1998 Presario with a Pentium II processor running Windows 95, no freeze occurs. The SCSI controller is different -- it's an ISA Adaptec model. My ASUS motherboard doesn't have ISA slots, so I can't use the same controller.

Here's a resulting slide scan from that setup:

What steps do I take in order to overcome boot freeze in XP and use the scanner?

Hi Chuck,
did you somehow manage to solve your problem with the 2920C under XP? It seems I'm currently in similar trouble - I try to get a Iomega JAZ drive (removable 1GB disk) to work.
